Here are some tips to follow so that you and your whole family can practice driving and road safety:

  • Make sure you do regular check-ups on your car- this is to ensure that your car is always in good shape.  It is very important to do a simple security check on your car before you go on a long road trip.  Check if all the lights are working properly.  Check for leaks and check the inflation of the tires.
  • Review road signs- there are many types of road signs and it is very important to know what each road sign means.  But more than knowing what road signs mean, it is important for a driver to follow them at all times.
  • Fight the urge to nag the driver- if you are not the one driving, resist the urge to be a backseat driver- giving instructions and nagging the driver.  Just sit back, relax and allow the driver to focus on the road.
  • Before driving off, make sure you adjust all mirrors and seats- as soon as you get in the car adjust all mirrors and seats so that you are comfortable with the position and your view of the road. It is important to have the mirrors in the right position so that you don’t have blind spots.
  • Always wear your seatbelt- The seatbelt saves lives.  Wearing a seatbelt protects passengers from flying off during strong impacts.
  • Drive with your headlights on- having the headlights on make the car more visible to other drivers on the road.
  • Always stop at stop signs- even when the intersection seems empty never try to beat a stop light.
  • Check the road before proceeding when the stop light turns green- this is to ensure that some irresponsible driver, who is trying to beat the red light, does not hit you.  Look at your left side then look to the right then straight on the road and then make a final look at the left before going off.
  • Don’t drive too close to the car in front of you- always make sure that there is a good gap between you and the car in front of you.  This is especially important when it is raining or when there is snow n the road.
  • Do not talk on the phone while driving- when you talk on the phone or do other tasks when you are driving your attention is not completely on the road.
