All the fun your kids had during summer can make for a stressful start of the new school year for your children.  Kids become anxious that their fun days are over and become unwilling to go back to school. Other factors that affect children’s enthusiasm for school are adjusting to a new environment (for new students), adjusting to a new teacher and the knowledge that they need to deal with tougher lessons in school.

Here are some tips on how to prepare your children for school:

  • Set your children’s bed time- even during the summer make sure your children follow the set schedule for bed time. If you can’t make them go to bed early during the summer then make sure they start going to bed early at least a week of two before the opening of the new school year. This will allow your children to get ample sleep and will help them prepare for waking up early during school days.
  • Psyche your children about school- at least two weeks before school starts make sure you talk to your children about the new school year. Tell them how fun it would be to go back to school to meet up with old friends and gain new ones.  Psyche them about the possibilities that come with a new school year.
  • Prepare everything your child needs for school-make a list of the things your children need in school and make sure you have everything before the school starts.  Most of the stress related with the start of the school year can be avoided with careful planning. Take your children when shopping for school supplies so that they can also get excited about going back to school.
  • Discuss allowances before school starts- discuss allowances and other money matters before school starts.
  • Make sure you too are prepared- the opening of the new school year means changes in the parents’ schedule as well. Summers also mean more relaxed schedules for parents. When school begins, you will need to wake up early, prepare breakfast and help your children get ready for school.  Make sure you are also ready for these changes so that you don’t get stressed out as well.
